In support of Diponegoro University’s commitment to becoming a world-class research university and fostering an international academic atmosphere through the Undip Global Classroom (UGC) program, the Undergraduate Mathematics Study Program successfully conducted a UGC activity for the Algebra 1 course on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, and Friday, May 22, 2026, at 07.30 WIB via Zoom Meeting.
The UGC program, which was integrated into two regular lecture sessions, featured Assoc. Prof. Edna Nazaire-Gueco, Ph.D. from the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, College of Science, University of the Philippines Baguio, as the invited speaker. Moderated by the Algebra 1 course lecturer, Suryoto, S.Si., M.Si., the sessions focused on the topic “Group Theory: Group Homomorphism, Isomorphism Theorems, and Their Applications.”
Throughout the two sessions, Prof. Edna delivered materials closely aligned with the Algebra 1 curriculum being studied during the semester. In the first session, she introduced the motivation behind the concept of group homomorphism, complemented by engaging examples, relevant properties, and detailed mathematical proofs. The discussion provided students with a deeper understanding of the theoretical foundations of homomorphisms in abstract algebra.
In the second session, Prof. Edna presented applications of group homomorphism and related concepts, particularly in music theory. One of the highlights was the demonstration of an isomorphic relationship between musical transformations and dihedral groups, illustrating how abstract mathematical concepts can be applied to interdisciplinary contexts.
The program was attended by 97 students in the first session and 102 students in the second session, the majority of whom were enrolled in the Algebra 1 course within the Undergraduate Mathematics Study Program. Through this activity, students were expected to broaden their perspectives on global developments in mathematics while gaining academic experiences within an international learning environment that promotes global perspectives, intercultural understanding, and critical thinking toward contemporary challenges.
For lecturers, the UGC program also provides opportunities to strengthen international academic networks, foster cross-border research collaborations, and enhance teaching capacity through internationally oriented learning practices. Beyond enriching classroom instruction, the Undip Global Classroom serves as a strategic platform for expanding students’ international exposure, strengthening a global academic atmosphere, and cultivating a culture of international collaboration.
