UNDIP Global Classroom Strengthens International Collaboration through Guest Lectures on Fuzzy Set Theory

The Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science and Mathematics, Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP), successfully organized another Undip Global Classroom (UGC) program as part of its commitment to strengthening international academic collaboration and enriching students’ global learning experiences. The program featured Associate Professor Dr. Normah Maan from the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Faculty of Science, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), an expert in Fuzzy Set Theory, Mathematical Modelling, and Delay Differential Equations.

The guest lectures were conducted online on 18 May 2026 and 19 May 2026 for students enrolled in the Introduction to Fuzzy Set Theory course. The sessions were moderated by Jovian Dian Pratama, S.Mat., M.Mat., Lecturer in Mathematics and Coordinator of the Introduction to Fuzzy Set Theory course at the Department of Mathematics, Universitas Diponegoro.

The program attracted enthusiastic participation from undergraduate students, providing them with valuable opportunities to learn directly from an internationally recognized scholar and to broaden their perspectives on the theoretical foundations and practical applications of fuzzy mathematics.

Lecture 1: Arithmetic Operations of Fuzzy Set Theory

The first lecture, held on 18 May 2026, focused on Arithmetic Operations of Fuzzy Set Theory. During the session, Dr. Normah introduced the concept of fuzzy numbers and explained the fundamental arithmetic operations used in fuzzy mathematics, including addition and subtraction of fuzzy numbers.

Through systematic explanations and illustrative examples, participants learned how fuzzy arithmetic extends classical arithmetic to handle uncertainty and imprecision, making it an essential tool in decision-making, engineering, artificial intelligence, and mathematical modelling.

The interactive discussion allowed students to strengthen their conceptual understanding while exploring practical applications of fuzzy arithmetic in solving real-world problems.

Lecture 2: Multiplication Operation of Fuzzy Set Theory

The second lecture, conducted on 19 May 2026, continued the discussion by focusing on the Multiplication Operation of Fuzzy Set Theory. Building upon the concepts introduced in the previous lecture, Dr. Normah explained various approaches for multiplying fuzzy numbers, highlighting the mathematical principles, computational procedures, and practical considerations involved in fuzzy multiplication.

Students actively participated in solving example problems and discussing the advantages and challenges of applying multiplication operations within fuzzy environments. The session further demonstrated how fuzzy arithmetic provides flexible mathematical tools for modelling uncertainty in numerous scientific and engineering applications.

Promoting Global Learning and Academic Partnership

The participation of Associate Professor Dr. Normah Maan in the Undip Global Classroom program reflects the growing academic partnership between Universitas Diponegoro and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).
